London Ontario has just one Passport Canada Location, which makes things pretty easy for me.
Other cities have different kinds of offices, the "full-blown" ones that do everything, like the one in London, and others that just receive applications and basically proof-read them for you before mailing them somewhere else for actual processing.
The "full-blown" Passport Canada locations, like the one in London, can do Express applications, urgent Canadian passport applications and other advanced services like that (for a fee of course!).
In recent times, the passport lineups for new applications and such have shortened greatly from when you always heard them on the news.
HOWEVER, as of June 2009, everyone will need a passport just to drive across the US Border. It used to be only required if you were to fly into the US (and come in by boat I believe). So, there may very well be another Canadian passport renewal rush again like in the past by stragglers. So, I highly suggest getting your passport as soon as you can.
If you are going to be visiting the office, I suggest reading this article on how to skip the entire line at the London Passport Office at no-cost, and save yourself time when you get through the line too.
